HENNER ALMS MODERATES PANEL AT THE 26TH FAIR CONFERENCE IN MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

This year’s FAIR Conference, which took place from 23-25 September 2019 in Marrakech, debated the impact from new economic barriers on Afro Asian insurance and reinsurance markets. Henner Alms was honoured to moderate the key panel addressing the theme. The esteemed panelists were Youssef Fassi Fihri, CEO of SCR; Kamal Tabaja, Group COO of Trust Re; Hedi Hachicha, CUO, Treaty P&C, Middle East & Africa at SCOR and Oumar Ba, CEO Cima Région at Continental Re.

As a discussion basis for the panel, Henner Alms also presented to the delegates the key findings of a research paper which we produced on behalf of SCR and FAIR, analysing the “Mechanisms of cooperation among emerging market reinsurers and the relevance of intra-regional trade flows”.

Investigating the inward premiums flows of 20 emerging market reinsurers from the FAIR region, the paper found that most of these mainly regional reinsurers use reciprocal exchanges and retrocession, cross shareholdings, pool solutions or partnerships to expand the geographic spread of their book of business, access risks that are commonly beyond their reach or that might require an otherwise higher security.

This year’s Africa Reinsurance Pulse, sponsored by the African Insurance Organisation, Africa Re, Continental Re and Tunis Re, reflects a slightly more bearish outlook on the continent’s reinsurance industry by the region’s reinsurance executives. Declining rates and rising claims weigh on the profitability of the African reinsurance markets with a current premium volume of roughly US$ 7.5 billion.

We are grateful for the opportunity to again present the Africa Reinsurance Pulse at the 24th AIO Reinsurance Forum, which took place from 29 September to 2 October in Tunis, Tunisia. Andreas Bollmann shared the survey’s key findings with the delegates.

ASEAN INSURANCE PULSE 2019 PUBLISHED - REGIONAL INSURANCE EXECUTIVES PURSUE A MEASURED APPROACH TO DIGITISATION

The ASEAN Insurance Pulse 2019 published by Dr. Schanz, Alms & Company and sponsored by Malaysian Reinsurance Berhad (Malaysian Re) was launched on 1 October 2019 at the occasion of the 12th ASEAN Insurance Congress in Bali, Indonesia by Zainudin Ishak, president & chief executive officer, Malaysian Reinsurance Berhad.

The survey, based on more than 40 executive interviews, analyses the impact of digitisation on the region’s US$ 31 billion non-life insurance markets and their growth and profitability prospects.
